Edmunds and Tommy ‘Tanks’ Edman FuelDodgers Fans With $25K Gas Giveaway

Car shopping site gives LA drivers free gas on Sept. 25 as the Dodgers close out the regular season against the Giants.

Los Angeles-based car shopping site Edmunds today announced it is fueling Los Angeles Dodgers fans for the team’s October baseball run with $25,000 in free gas on Friday, Sept. 25.

Named for Dodgers superutility player Tommy “Tanks” Edman and playing off his jersey number, 25, the Tommy Tanks Gas Giveaway will be held at Longo Lexus in El Monte, California. Fans must arrive by car to participate and are encouraged to wear Dodger blue. A total of 333 $75 gas gift cards from 76® will be distributed while supplies last, limited to one per vehicle. 

“We thought it would be fun to take Tommy’s nickname beyond the ballpark and give fans a little relief at the pump as they cheer on the Dodgers into October,” said Alison Steinlauf Anziska, senior vice president of marketing at Edmunds.

The giveaway idea comes from Edmunds’ own research. In a survey of more than 2,000 Dodgers fans earlier this season, 80 percent said they would rather see the Dodgers win a third consecutive World Series title than see gas prices fall to $1 a gallon. Nearly one-third (32 percent) said they would spend five hours or more traveling to and from a Dodgers home game in October. Two-thirds said they have skipped work, school or another major obligation to attend a game.

“Teaming with Edmunds to fuel up the best fanbase in baseball for another October run is an awesome way to thank LA for showing up for us night in and night out,” Edman said.

The giveaway lands as LA drivers keep paying some of the highest gas prices in the country. AAA put the average price for regular fuel in the Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area at $6.09 on Sept. 16. Edmunds data shows the rest of car ownership isn’t getting cheaper either. The average monthly payment on a new vehicle hit a record $777 in the second quarter.

The event is the latest element of Edmunds’ “Back to Back” brand campaign with the Dodgers and Edman. For the campaign, Edmunds turned its Gas Savings Calculator into the Tommy Tanks Gas Calculator, which estimates how much drivers could save by switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle or a different powertrain. Fans will use the calculator onsite as part of claiming their gift card.

Earlier this season, Edmunds ran a sweepstakes offering a VIP gameday experience and a free vehicle appraisal. It also launched “The Challenge,” its second consecutive hero digital ad campaign starring Edman, in which he helps fans make the right call on their next car purchase.
