The Corner Partners with UK Charity London Youth

10 two-week work experience placements will be offered to Croydon based teenagers. Further commitment from the agency to improve diversity in the UK ad industry

Independent creative agency, The Corner, announces today its partnership with London Youth, a charity on a mission to improve the lives of young people in London, and the first of 900 charities Prince Philip was patron of. Focused on employability, the initiative aims to help young people between the ages of 14-18, who’re at risk of falling out of education or employment.

Instigated by the The Mayor of London and the London Assembly, the program is delivered through 10 London Youth clubs; The Corner will work exclusively with ‘Reaching Higher’ based in Croydon.

Amanda Uduku, Programme Officer, London Youth said “HeadStart Action is an imperative programme to the development of young people’s skills and exposes them to work placements opportunities with reputable companies. We’re delighted to have The Corner London as a corporate partner as not only are they well known within their industry but also help diversify our professional offering.”

Beginning in April, the programme will involve running ‘enlightenment sessions’ for up to 30 young people where The Corner will introduce them to the industry, the agency, the different jobs that people do and how employees got to where they are. Across May and June interviews will take place, culminating in 10 two-week work experience placements being offered between July and September. During the course of their fortnight at the agency, candidates will have a central contact allocated to them based on their personal interest, they will shadow different roles and meetings, whilst also working on a special project that they will present back at the end of the placement.

Jonny Angel, Managing Director, The Corner said “The Corner is a place “where people meet and things happen”. The more diverse the skills and backgrounds of those people, the better the agency we’ll be. Alongside a range of initiatives, we are developing to bring more diverse talent into the industry, “HeadStart” focuses on those young people who probably don’t even consider a career in advertising as an option. Having worked with London Youth for over 5 years now, we have seen firsthand just how vital they are to the healthy development of young people living in London. We can’t wait to work with them again on such an urgent and important project.”

Over the past five years, The Corner have worked with London Youth in a number of different ways:

Between 2016 and 2019 the agency participated in the charity’s City Leaders program, encouraging and enabling young people to design and deliver social action projects within their community’s

In November 2018 The Corner launched ‘Champion London Youth’; working with global sportswear brand Champion, the agency created a collection of T-shirts that tore up the unfair labels that society places on young people, and created new ones to be proud of: https://www.thecornerlondon.com/work/champion-london-youth/

The agency’s Office Manager and partners Personal Assistant, Fahima Khatun came to the agency through the charity in 2016 as an assistant office manager. In the four and a half years she’s been there, Khatun has had two promotions.

Fahima Khatun, Office Manager and Personal Assistant, The Corner said “London Youth helped me get out of retail and into administration, which is something I’ve always been interested in. I joined The Corner at entry level as Assistant Office Manager. A young 19-year-old who had no idea what a creative agency was or did. London Youth gave me the opportunity to learn all about an industry I never knew existed before. Office management is what I want to do for a career now, thanks to London Youth and The Corner.”
