‘I couldn’t let him miss it!’ Bride pulls off epic England surprise for footy-mad groom

A footy-mad groom who thought he’d have to miss England’s big clash against Panama got the wedding surprise of his dreams on Saturday.

Manchester United fan, Mark Fletcher, tied the knot with Meg Fletcher at Allington Manor in Grantham on Saturday 27th June – and was left speechless when a giant screen showing the game turned up at their evening do. The newlyweds and their guests were able to cheer England on to victory thanks to the surprise, which was delivered by AO.com’s custom match-day truck.

“Mark has been an absolute keeper throughout our wedding planning.” Meg Fletcher explained, “We started organising everything around 18 months ago, long before the fixtures had even been announced, so we had no idea there would be a clash with the match. Although he never once complained, I knew he was secretly disappointed and I just could not let him miss it.”

After realising how disappointed her husband was to be missing the big game, Meg secretly teamed up with AO.com to make sure he didn’t miss a second of the action. She kept the plans under wraps until the big day, leaving Mark stunned when the giant screen arrived.

Meg continued: “Keeping the surprise under wraps was not easy, but seeing the look on his face when the screen came on made it completely worth it. It was such a special moment and our guests absolutely loved being part of it. It made an already unforgettable day even more memorable. Thank you to everyone who helped make today’s surprise happen.”

Nick Bunce, an AO.com TV expert, said: “Meg and Mark are such a lovely couple and it’s been fantastic to pull off this surprise on their wedding day. Having a big match clash with something important in the diary can be a nightmare for footy fans, but when it’s your own wedding, the game obviously has to come second. Thankfully, we’ve been able to put a TV on the road to make sure nobody missed a second of the action and create a memorable wedding experience for everyone.”

The surprise was inspired by an AO TV survey which uncovered how almost 1 in 3 (31%) of people were planning their ‘entire social calendar’ around this summer’s football fixtures. The data also showed that men (37%) were more likely than women (25%) to put football at the top of their summer priority list.
