Wavemaker, the new billion-dollar revenue, media, content and technology agency, has appointed Josep Hernandez as Global Managing Director – L’Oréal.
Based in the Wavemaker Paris office, Josep will lead the agency’s relationship with the global L’Oréal clients based in France, ensuring that their strategies and recommendations are fully understood and enabled locally by Wavemaker client teams. He will report directly to Wavemaker Global Chief Client Officer Aaron Smith.
Since 2012, Josep has been the Senior Director of Global Media Strategy and Communications Planning at Mondelēz International. The innovations he implemented to the global planning process directly contributed to the increase of global media ROI that the company has experienced in recent years, particularly across some of their most famous brands such as Oreo, Cadbury and Trident. As a recognition for his work, he was recently appointed Chairman of the Euro Effies.
Prior to 2012, for 15 years, Josep held various leadership roles at WPP within Wunderman, Y&R and Ogilvy, particularly in New York, but also in the London, Madrid, Barcelona and Los Angeles offices.
Commenting on the appointment, Aaron Smith said: “Client centricity is a key strategic shift for Wavemaker, and with more than 20 years’ experience in media strategy, brand planning, insights and digital transformation across agencies and advertisers, Josep brings all the seniority and expertise we need to deliver for our largest global client. He has led some of the most successful marketing cases not only in Cosmetics but also in CPG with Danone, Nestlé and across other sectors such as technology and finance, for Microsoft and Citibank, and we are incredibly happy to welcome him back to WPP and Wavemaker.”
Josep added: “Having spent the last five years as a client, I have experienced first-hand the challenges advertisers face today. The industry requires new agency models that are agile, transparent and scalable, turning data and smart tech into first mover advantages across media, commerce and content strategies. Wavemaker’s ambition, its obsession with the purchase journey and its laser sharp focus on client relationships will give the agency and its clients a genuine competitive edge in a highly competitive and constantly changing environment.”
Josep joins from Kraft Foods/Mondelēz International where he was Senior Director of Global Media Strategy and Communications Planning. Based in Zurich, Josep led global media across the company’s Global Category Teams and for global brands, including Cadbury, Oreo, Trident and Toblerone. In this capacity, he was responsible for the company’s media ROI strategy, the roll-out of Connections Planning and the media implementation of Ehrenberg-Bass’ Laws of Growth.
Josep holds a Masters in Social Sciences and Consumer Behaviour from the University of Chicago, a BA from the University of Barcelona and has been awarded the La Caixa Fellowship by the King of Spain. He is an active keynote speaker for Cannes Lions, the Monaco Media Forum, PR Week and across numerous universities including ESADE, Harvard, UofB and Instituto di Design in Milan. In 2015, Josep was appointed Chairman of the EURO Effies.
