World’s largest digital display on a hot air balloon for Amazon Prime Video’s Aeronauts Launch

UK based CSM Live worked with AMAZON STUDIOS & AKQA in North America to deliver an experiential activation to take viewing experiences to dizzying new heights.

‘Some reach for the stars, others push people towards them’

To celebrate the hugely anticipated stateside release of Amazon Original movie, The Aeronauts, nothing short of groundbreaking (or sky-soaring) would do! Amazon Studios wanted to showcase and reflect the movies narrative of curiosity and innovation in a truly unique way; engaging with viewers like never before.

Blending the indelible pioneering spirit of the past with the groundbreaking technology of the future, premiere-goers watched Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne fly higher than anyone else in history – both on-screen and in situ – on the world’s first digital hot air balloon.

Delivering a sense of awe and edge of your seat excitement, the balloon measures a staggering 31m (101ft) in height, and contains an awesome 76,752 pixels. This goliath engineering and technological feat provides spectators with a 336㎡, 360°viewing experience, covering a 56m circumference.

The digital screen is truly unique – developed by CSM Live, they made the tech lighter and thinner, so it could become part of the skin of the hot air balloon.

Stacey Knight, Commercial & Marketing Director, CSM Live:

“To work with forward thinking, innovative and truly inspirational partners on this activation was nothing short of a delight. Together with AKQA we delivered an awe inspiring, breathtaking and immersive activation for the launch of Amazon Studio’s Aeronauts – bringing people the world’s first – and only – flying theatre, in the form of a digital hot air balloon.”

Tethered to 4 x 4 vehicles and enhanced with 2 high resolution screens, to ensure nothing compromised the viewing experience, this was a screening not to be missed; setting the bar for future activations – the sky is no longer the limit!

The screening took to the skies in Los Angeles, California and also travelled to Phoenix, Arizona in advance of the official US launch date of the movie.
